A local couple is resurrecting the historic Maddox Feed Store and aiming to offer the myriad services and inventory the store has been known for over the years.
Morgan Perkins and his partner, Kelley Thomas, have worked out a deal with the owners and former management of Maddox to re-open the business under the same name at the town of Louisa location.
“There’s a lot of history in this building,” Thomas said. “We feel like customers have missed that one-on-one kind of customer service they get here. A lot of people want to have the option to shop local and keep their money inside the community.”
Perkins said that maintaining a place like Maddox isn’t just about preserving history, but about the survival of small businesses in Louisa County.
“I think it’s extremely important to keep revenue in Louisa,” Perkins said. “Every time you shop corporate, [the money] never comes back.”
Maddox will re-open Oct. 5 with a “farm swap,” an informal livestock bartering event where people can trade farm animals.
“Everything that Maddox used to do, we’re going to do,” Perkins said. “We are going to try, anyway. We’re even adding a few new things. We’re going to have some local produce [and] some locally made craft goods, like honey and soap.”
Straw, seeds, fishing gear, ammunition, salt blocks and cattle supplies are only a fraction of the variety of goods Maddox carried, and will carry again. Maddox was one of Louisa’s few federally licensed firearms dealers, ; Perkins and Thomas intend to renew that service.
“We’re even going to have the machine to make engraved dog collars,” Thomas said.
The venture is a big step for the pair. Perkins, who owns and operates Mo’s Trapping and Damage Control, will be making his first foray into owning a retail space. Thomas, whose grandfather was a successful business owner in Charlottesville, credits him for her entrepreneurial spirit and her “hustle.”
“I think people are looking for ways to support local businesses,” she said. “I think having somewhere that knows your name, that is loyal to its customers, is something people will be loyal towards in return.”
Maddox Feed Store is located at 103 Church Avenue in the town of Louisa.
