Veterans of Foreign War post announces student essay contests

Commander Patrick Lane of the Mineral Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8947 announced the annual Voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen scholarship competition for high school and middle school students.

Participants in the high school contest must write and record an essay of three to five minutes on the theme, “Is This the Country the Founders Envisioned?”

Entrants will compete at the local Post level and could advance to the district and state levels. All state winners will receive a four-day trip to Washington, D.C. and their chance to compete for their share of more than $150,000 in scholarships. The first-place winner receives a $30,000 college scholarship.

Lane also kicked off the Patriot’s Pen essay competition for students in grades six to eight. The theme this year is, “What is Patriotism to Me?” The first-place winner at the national level wins $5,000 and a trip to the nation’s capital.

The deadline for student entries is Oct. 31. Contact Lane with questions at 540-287-1454 or Wanda Early, auxiliary president, at 434-589-3448.
