Audrey Marie Mitchell Kuhnle

Audrey Marie Mitchell Kuhnle lived 103 years, 294 days! She spent the last three and a half years in Central Virginia, having lived in Baltimore all her life.

Audrey was the first child of Harry Mitchell and Cora Wissig. She had three siblings, Frances, Frank, and Harry. She graduated high school and attended business school after that. She married Joseph Robert Kuhnle in September 1937 and they were together 59 years until his passing in 1996. She worked in the Baltimore County school system for over 30 years before she retired in the 1980s. In the late 1990s, she and Franklin Hoffmaster started a loving relationship. They were companions until his passing in 2009. She was an avid Baltimore Orioles fan, attending many games, from the first Orioles game in 1954 to her last attendance of a home game in 2012. She rarely missed an inning of play on the TV or radio, even after she moved, and she lived long enough to see her beloved Orioles win their first home game in 570 days. She loved flowers, wild birds, gardening, and being the hostess of gatherings of her family and friends.

Audrey is survived by her son, Robert (Kathleen), of Louisa; four grandchildren, Kristi, Scott, Kurt, and Kellianne; along with eight great-grandchildren, Nathan, Jacob, Mia, Liam, Colin, Laura, Gabriel, and Isabella.

Everyone who knew Audrey loved her. When the staff at her home knew she was moving on, each stopped in to say goodbye. None left without tears. Her favorite nurse painted her nails and combed her hair because she knew Audrey would want to look her best when seeing her husband again. Franklin was likely pleased as well. All of the staff had stories about her and all said they loved her. Talk about leaving your mark on this world! She was a very strong woman with enormous love for everyone, especially her son, the light of her life.

Congratulations on a life well-lived, Audrey. You’ve earned a much-deserved rest in peace and you will be so missed. You were put here to experience life, to be a teacher of important lessons, and most of all TO LOVE. It is what survives and supersedes everything. Your love will live on in everyone who loved you and the Universe is thankful for you.
