Carl Eugene Smith (Smitty), 81, of Louisa passed away on Monday, July 20, 2020, at his home. He was born November 27, 1938 in Green Springs to the late George Alfred Smith, Sr. and Ollie Blanch Smith. He is also preceded in death by his sisters Emily Jackson, Mary Lorraine Smith and Edna Sykes; and brothers Earl Randolph Smith and Alfred Smith. He is survived by his wife Carolyn Smith, of Louisa; daughters Charline Watkins, of Denver, North Carolina and Kimberly Conley and husband Randolph, of Charlottesville; son Keith and wife Meredith Smith, of Richmond; six grandchildren, Chamira Watkins, Tyree Watkins, Casey Smith, Miriah Smith, Lauren Smith and Gabriel Smith; three great-grandchildren; his sisters Cora Hagins of Chesterfield and Jayne and brother-in-law Ernest Lewis of Louisa; six sister-in-laws and five brother-in-laws; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
As the seventh of eight children, Carl was born and raised in Louisa County where he attended school. He later joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea, Italy, and Germany over the course of his nine years of service. After leaving the army, Carl moved to New Jersey and drove public transit for the Port Authority for several years before relocating to Virginia in 1973 where he met his beloved wife, Carolyn Smith. Carl worked at Dominion Energy (formally Virginia Power) for 20 years in quality controls until his retirement in June 1994. Carl later went on to work for Louisa County Public Schools as a bus driver and hall monitor until his second retirement in 2011.
Carl loved fishing, carpentry, gardening, traveling, listening to music, spending time with friends and family and volunteering on construction projects of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Carl was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and attended the Mineral congregation.
Carl had a great sense of humor and was a very generous person. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends and all who had the privilege to know him. Memorial services will be held via video conference on Saturday, August 15, 2020. D. D. Watson Mortician, Inc., Louisa, handled the arrangements.
