In the early-morning hour of January 2, 2021, the Angel of the Lord stopped by for Horace Bruce Jr. and the Angels said. “We know you’re loved by many, but God loves you more and has called you home to be with him.”
Horace Bruce Jr. was born on November 10, 1935. He was the son of the late Horace Lee and Ruth Key Bruce and the baby boy of their six children.
Preceding in death were his wife of 65 years, Clara Bruce; one son, Maurice Bruce; his parents, Horace Lee and Ruth Bruce; and two sisters, Ruthann Turpin and Reva Salley. Horace was baptized at County Line Baptist Church and remained a member throughout his life.
Horace’s schooling was very minimal due to having to help his father on their farm. Horace married Clara Virginia Quarles on March 20, 1954. They celebrated 65 years of marriage until her death on February 8, 2020.
Horace worked for many years as a logger, cutting down trees; he worked at Andy Tire Company and Fluvanna County Public Schools as a custodian. Throughout his life, his passion was farming his vegetable garden, and raising pigs and chickens to help feed his family.
Horace is survived by his children, Brenda Simpson, Horace D. Bruce (Roxanne), Shelia Davis (Nate), Maxine Murphy, Laurie Tolliver (Billy) and Irvin Bruce (Delores); 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Price, of Kents Store and Janie Holland, of Palmyra; and one brother, Shirley Bruce (Kathleen), of Kents Store and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
An intimate graveside family service will be held. We hope to host a Celebration of Life at a better time.
