Marian Evelyn Coles Harris

Marian Evelyn Coles Harris, 88, entered into eternal rest on May 9, 2020. She was born on April 19, 1932 to the late Alfred and Beatrice Coles.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Harris Sr.; three daughters, Vanessa Gail, Odessa Eloise and Cheryl Vernell; a sister, Esther Johnson; her brothers, Paul Coles and Samuel Winston; and a foster sister, Sarah Thaniel.

At an early age, Marian joined the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Robinson. She was a faithful member until her health began to decline.

She attended the Louisa County Public Schools. She was employed at the Louisa Manufactory and also had a job of being the community babysitter. Marian was loving and outgoing and could begin a conversation with anyone. Those who really knew her, knew that she didn’t like any funny stuff or teasing, but on the other hand, she loved attention. Her interest in the piano began with her banging on “Big Mama Patterson,” her grandmother’s piano. As time passed, she began to play better. She played at church while her mom and sisters sang. It became the beginning of the renowned Coles Sisters. She expressed so much joy in playing. All of her singing groups knew to be ready when she hit those keys, no looking at her if something went wrong and no sitting in front of her. She played for eight different churches in the county: Mt. Olivet, Mt. Hope, New Line, Divine, Mt. Garland, Mt. Gilliam Old Site, Philippi and Ebenezer. Her playing even took her to other states such as Maryland, North Carolina, Delaware and New Jersey.

Marian leaves with cherished memories, a loving daughter, Leatrice Pace; a loving son, George W. Harris Jr. (Barbara); a loving grandson, Jermaine Pace Sr. (Jackie); two precious granddaughters, Chasity Harris and Jasmine Harris; a devoted great-grandson, Jermaine Pace Jr.; loving great-grandsons, Jhalil Parris and Sunta Grimm (Myra); great-granddaughters, Kahi Bundick and Saige Grimm; three loving sisters, Shirley Johnson, Joyce Holt and Arlean Anderson (Warren); brother-in-law, Thomas Harris; sisters-in-law, Eva Shelton, Nan Johnson and Corrine Harris; three foster sisters, Florence Trice, Mary Holman and Venus Winfield; devoted nieces, Edith Taylor, Darryl Holt, Patricia Johnson and Sandra Trice; devoted nephews, Gary Coles, Leslie Johnson, Ricky Johnson, Earl Richardson and Sidney Richardson; a host of great- nieces, and nephews; and two loving God-sons, Pastor Alex Shelley and Pastor Temple Anderson.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, 2020 at The Sun Chapel at D. D. Watson of Louisa with Pastor Alex Shelley officiating. Interment followed at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery, 17520 Jefferson Highway Montpelier, VA 23192.
