Ruby Seay Barlow Bell passed away November 21, 2022 at her home in the care of family.
Ruby was born on June 25th, 1929, the daughter of James Early Seay and Tommie Poore Seay, founders of Seay’s Furniture Shop. She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband (Robert Terrell Barlow), and 7 of her 8 siblings, her brothers, Howard, Harold, Fred, Aubrey and Douglas Seay and sisters Roberta Seay and Phyllis Seay Stanley. She is survived by her brother, Romulus G. Seay (Dot) her children, Tommy Barlow (Mary Anne), Deborah Jenkins (Franklin), Gregory Barlow (Jennifer), Andrea Bell Henshaw (Randy), Bridgett Bell Carter, her former husband James H. Bell, Jr. and his son, Paul Bell (Karen).
After raising her children, she retired from being a hairdresser and put herself back in school, graduating with her nursing degree at age 57. She worked the night shift and golfed on her way home most mornings, before retiring from Martha Jefferson Hospital. Ruby was a champion amateur golfer and golfed with countless friends because her family wasn’t good enough to keep up. Retirement didn’t suit Ruby and she provided in-home nursing care for elderly patients well into her own 80s.
In addition to being a loving mother, Ruby was a beloved Nanny to 10 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and faithful to her canine companion, Teddy. She was a favorite aunt and a good friend to many. Ruby loved her family, antiques, golf, flowers, gardening, and had visors in every color.
