Lucid Motors has started production of customer-quality vehicles at its new factory in Casa Grande, Arizona. Deliveries of the new Lucid Air to customers begin in late October; the start-up electric vehicle (EV) maker says it has more than 13,000 reservations for the large luxury sedan. Lucid is planning to introduce a new SUV model soon.
First to roll off the assembly line, the Air Dream Edition is the top-of-the-line model. It will be available in limited quantities, with just 520 examples built. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Lucid Air Dream Edition range rating is 520 miles, 115 miles more than a Tesla Model S Long Range. The Lucid Air Dream Edition's price is $169,000, more than double the cost of the Tesla.
You need not spend that much money to buy a new Lucid Air. The Air Pure, the base version of the car, is priced from $77,400 and nudges the Tesla Model S Long Range at 406 miles of driving on a full charge. From there, you can upgrade to the Air Touring ($95,000) and Air Grand Touring ($139,000). As you move up the trim level ladder, horsepower grows from 480 (Pure) to 620 (Touring), 800 (Grand Touring), and 1,111 (Dream Edition).
The Air Grand Touring nearly matches the Dream Edition for range, at an EPA-rated 516 miles. Furthermore, its 112-kWh battery pack achieves an efficiency rating of 4.6 miles per kWh. According to Lucid, that is an industry-leading figure.
"The proprietary EV technology that Lucid has developed will make it possible to travel more miles using less battery energy. Our technology will allow for increasingly lighter, more efficient, and less expensive EVs, and today represents a major step in our journey to expand the accessibility of more sustainable transportation," said Peter Rawlinson, CEO and CTO, Lucid Group.
Additionally, thanks to its available 900-volt charging architecture in some trims, a Lucid Air recoups an estimated 300 miles of range in 20 minutes using the most powerful DC fast-charging stations. Lucid Motors is partnering with Electrify America, and customers who reserve their new Air in 2021 will receive complimentary use of 350-kW DC fast chargers in the Electrify America network for three years.
