For Angel Hough, who sells land, houses and commercial property with her husband Doug on Lake Anna and in the surrounding area, real estate was the right profession because of the freedom it offers.
“While we were raising kids, it was great because it allowed us to work around their sports and school functions,” she said.
Angel started as a real estate assistant in 1993 before becoming licensed. Doug got his own license a year later after starting out in mortage banking and appraising. They are now associate brokers.
“The fact that both of us have been full-time agents for this long, managed to raise two kids and are still in business after all the ups and downs that the real estate market has seen—that’s when you know you are doing something right,” Angel said.
Those ups and downs included the Great Recession that started in 2008.
“The biggest challenge was when the housing market crashed,” Angel said. “That was a very long, stressful time, but we got through it together.”
Angel advises anyone looking to start a service business in this area to “be prepared to work hard. It’s not easy and it requires a lot of time and commitment to make a successful business.”
