Keeping your boat water ready

Founded in 1963 under the name Ed’s Texaco, Louisa Boat & Motor has been serving the residents of Lake Anna, Lake Louisa, Lake Monticello and Lake of the Woods, as well as the surrounding communities and counties for more than 50 years.

The business changed its name in 1972. Greg and Robert Whitlock, who run the business, have worked there for many years and eeventually took over the business.

“Being your own boss isn’t easy because of the demands you are put under trying to keep a normal family life while dealing with the public, your business, your employees, etc.,” Greg said.

The business started out as a boat and auto repair shop and gas station, but switched to a full-time boat service, repair and rental business in the 1980s. Over the decades, the Whitlocks have assisted customers “from all walks of life.”

“We have served high government officials and professional athletes down to everyday people that have been enjoyable to do business with,” Greg said. “Some customers have purchased seven new boats from us during the span of our business.”

The Whitlocks have faced many challenges over the years, but the biggest ones facing them today, Greg said, are “the amount of training that is needed to work on today’s engines along with the struggle to find dependable help.”

“Keeping up with the ever-evolving technology of motors and keeping up with the training along with running a business cost a lot in today’s time,” he said.

Greg had several pieces of advice for new business owners.

“Find qualified help that are willing to work long hours and the owner needs to be involved in the everyday operations of the business,” he said. “Owning a business is a 24/7 job.”
