Two Louisa runners finished among the top 10 in the state at the Virginia High School League Class 4 state championship cross country meet on April 24.
Junior Nicholas Emmert and senior Branden Wood earned respective fifth- and eighth-place finishes in the meet. Emmert came in with a time of 16:37 and Wood finished in 16:41. Sophomore Kennedy Harris represented the Lions in the girls’ race, finishing 18th with a time of 20:58.
Loudoun Valley produced the state champion runners for both the boys’ and girls’ races with Matthew Smith and Ava Gordon finishing with respective times of 16:22 and 18:49. Loudoun’s girls won the team competition with a score of 33, followed by Blacksburg (59) and Tuscarora (86). The boys’ team competition was tight, with Jefferson Forest (61) earning a one-point victory over Grafton. Loudoun Valley’s team finished third with 65 points.
