Softball finishes stellar regular season, hosts Region 4D playoff game Thursday night in Mineral
The Louisa County High School varsity girls softball team wrapped up the Jefferson District regular season title with a pair of wins last week over Albemarle and Goochland.
The girls, riding a 12-game winning streak, finished district play with a 13-1 record and are 18-1 overall.
They next host Pulaski in a Region 4D tournament game Thursday, May 25, at 6 p.m. in Mineral.
The Lions finished the regular season last Thursday with a 6-2 win over Goochland at home. But, it wasn’t easy. The girls trailed 2-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning before a five-spot on the board broke the game open.
Goochland struck first with a run to open the game, but an inning later, the Lions tied it at 1-1. The Bulldogs (11-9) scratched out another run in the top of the fourth to reclaim the lead before Emily Gillespie shut down the Goochland bats the rest of the way.
Emily Chisholm homered and drove in two for the Lions, while Lauren Goodman hit a solo shot. Haley Walker had two hits, a run scored and a run batted in, while Laci Garnett had two hits and a run scored.
Gillespie tossed seven innings of four-hit ball, striking out 10 and not walking a batter.
Two nights earlier, the girls won a five-inning rout against visiting Albemarle, 12-0.
With eight runs in the second inning, the Lions all but assured the game’s ultimate outcome, before adding on four more runs for good measure.
Louisa cranked out only seven hits, but four of them were triples and one a double. They also took advantage of three walks and four Patriot errors to win handily.
Emily Gillespie pitched three hitless, scoreless innings, walking only one and fanning five. Haley Walker tossed two scoreless frames, allowing only two batters to reach—on a single and a walk.
Kourtney Kidd had one of the Lions’ four triples, drove in two and scored once. Savannah Bragg had a triple, run scored and run batted in. Addison Smith tripled, drove in a run and scored twice. Gillespie tripled, scored and drove in a run. Laci Garnett singled, scored once and plated one. Alyssa Hopkins had a double and an RBI. Lauren Goodman stole four of the eight bases the Lions swiped on the Albemarle defense.
Up next, the Lions host Pulaski in the Region 4D Tournament beginning Thursday at LCHS. The Cougars are 11-10 and represent the River Ridge District.
