The Louisa Lions wrestling program is officially underway for the season.
There is a lot of excitement brewing for this particular group of athletes - as many of the returning wrestlers feel as though they have unfinished business.
Coach Roger Stewart is returning for his third year at the helm of the Louisa Lions. With over 20 years of experience coaching under his belt, along with being a “Coach of the Year” award recipient in 2021, the amount of overall knowledge he brings to the group is essentially immeasurable.
Stewart is extremely passionate about his position, and really takes pride in developing these athletes into successful wrestlers and into young men.
“As the season approaches, my anticipation builds with thoughts of what’s to come,” said Stewart, “Long grueling practices, inevitable pain, and occasional blood on the mat.”

The Lions have three returning seniors who were all 2022 Regional Champions and state qualifiers. Senior Kasey Casazza is one of those said individuals with a big chip on his shoulder. Casazza is a key contributor to this squad with not only his leadership qualities, but his skillset on the mat.
Although they fell short of the regional title last season, the entire team is locked in and determined to reach those regional and state milestones. The group has performance goals on an individual level as well as a team. They also understand that with success comes high expectations and that they will need to work together to achieve tangible results.
“I can’t control their actions on the mat,” said Coach Stewart. “So overall my general goal is to build another solid foundation from the ground up...carrying my pack of Lions to their first regional title in school history.”
As of Nov. 7th the season has officially started, as the Lions’ wrestling squad begins to prepare for another eventful journey. The team has begun ramping up their practice schedule - although they have been participating in strength and conditioning programs year round.
They will begin scrimmaging on Nov. 19th in a match against J.R. Tucker High School, and official duels and invitationals will begin in early December.
