The Louisa Lions cross country team kicked off its season with the Ragged Mountain Cup race at Panorama Farms in Earlysville on Aug. 27.
The cup stands apart from standard cross country meets in that the race is run in a relay format. Runners compete in teams of four, each runner completing the two-mile course for an individual time.Awards are given out for both the fastest teams and fastest individual runners.
Louisa entered five teams in the event; two in the girls’ race and three in the boys’.
Senior Cierra Caicedo scored the second-fastest time for the meet, completing the course in 12 minutes, 14 seconds. Senior Alayna Campbell ran the second leg and finished in 13:20, also claiming a spot among the top 10 finishers. Maeve Myers and Sydney Madison ran the final two legs of the race, finishing with times of 14:34 and 13:57, respectively. The team combined for a time of 54:06, finishing third.
Branden Wood led the Lions’ first boys team, scoring a third-place individual finish with a time of 10:00. Bowen Varney ran the second leg of the race, finishing in 10:45 and finishing 13th overall. Josiah Cannon and Kyler Soriano ran the other legs for the team, earning respective times of 11:19 and 11:55. The team also finished third, with a combined time of 43:59.
In addition to top 10 finishes from Wood, Caicedo and Campbell, Louisa had a number of runners finish in the top 25. For the girls’ team, Madison finished 22nd, while Kennedy Harris, who ran the opening leg for Louisa’s second team, finished 21st with a time of 13:52.
On the boys’ team, Cannon and Nick Emmert each earned places among the top 25 runners in the meet. Emmert, who ran the course in 11:04, opened the race for Louisa’s second team. He was followed by Caiden Davenport (11:46), Andrew Choffel (11:52) and Everett Robinson (12:08), the group combining for a time of 46:50 and a seventh-place finish.
The Lions travel to Mechanicsville on Sept. 7 to race in the Pole Green Classic. Races begin at 8 a.m.
