Louisa County High School varsity football linebacker Austin Sims will join the Christopher Newport Captains defensive lineup for the 2020 season. He verbally committed to the school in February.
“[When I visited] I had a feeling that this was where I wanted to be next year,” he said. “I love the players, I love the coaches ... and the campus was beautiful.”
Sims has been on the gridiron since he was in fifth grade, playing as an offesnive lineman for most of his career. It wasn’t until his junior year, after he’d gotten a bit taller, that he was considered for the linebacker position.
His efforts in both positions scored him a number of postseason honors in his junior and senior seasons, including being named the Jefferson District defensive player of the year for 2019. He was also named to the first all-district team’s defensive roster in both seasons as a linebacker.
Between lineman and linebacker, Sims says he prefers the latter, in part due to the responsibility he has on the field.
“The linebackers are the leaders of the defense,” he said. “It’s your job to make sure the defense is set up right.”
Linebacker is the position Sims will be playing for Christopher Newport. He’s looking forward to getting to play at the collegiate level.
“I’m looking for a place where I feel at home,” he said. “Louisa’s got the best atmosphere to play in, and I’m looking forward to the atmosphere and crowd [at CNU].”
Sims plans to study computer engineering and will also be joining the school’s hockey club.
