Mary Anne Critzer

Mary Anne Critzer, 89, of Fredericksburg, VA passed away on August 27, 2026.
Born in Louisa, VA to Helen Arlene Wright and Robert Franklin Wright. She graduated from Louisa High School where she enjoyed studying Latin, history and working in the school library. While still in high school she worked part time at the Farm Extension Agency in Louisa. She was proud to have worked at The Virginia Telephone Company in Charlottesville for 10 years in the billing department with the new technology of punch card computers. This is where she met and later married the love of her life Galley. They began their married life in Rockville, MD in 1965. She became a homemaker and soon after they welcomed their first son and then a second son 4 years later. Their children were the light of their lives. In the mid 1970’s they moved to Fredericksburg, VA. She and Galley raised their family and lived for many years in the home he designed and built.
She spoke often of how she enjoyed volunteering as room mother at Chancellor Elementary School when her children were young. She was a member of Zoan Baptist Church and for a time was the librarian. Later in life she volunteered at The Mary Washington Hospital Thrift Shop. She loved to garden, raising beautiful flowers like Irises along with a large garden in which she grew the most delicious vegetables. Mary Anne was also an excellent cook. She spoke often of how she learned as a child to cook country style meals which usually included “biscuits or batter bread”. She loved listening to the music of Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, The Carter Sisters and Kris Kristofferson. Most of all she loved to hear her husband Galley sing and play the piano.
One of Mary Anne’s greatest joys came from being a grandmother to Colby and then great grandmother to Iris. She was always a very loving and giving mother and grandmother. Whenever she spoke of her granddaughter or great granddaughter her face would light up with a great big smile.
She is survived by her son, “GB” Galley Critzer, Jr. (Lorena); granddaughter, Colby Freiseis (Philip); great granddaughter, Iris; sister, Evelyn Wright; and daughter-in-law, Christina Critzer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Galley Boaz Critzer, Sr. and her son, Scott Denton Critzer.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 19th at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, with a reception to follow at the funeral home.
