Roadside History – Swan Tavern and Jack Jouett
Captain John Jouett, Sr., and his wife Mourning Glenn Harris were the parents of John Jouett, Jr. (Jack). Jack’s father owned and/or operated the Swan Tavern in Charlottesville and farmed a property near Cuckoo at a crossroads in Louisa County. Jouett family ancestors were French Huguenots emigrated from Normandy in France to Rhode Island in the American Colony, and later to Virginia in the early 1700’s. Louisa records for September 14, 1767, show that John Jouett renewed a license to keep an ordinary (tavern) in his house at a farm in Louisa County. 1
History come to life
Jack Jouett, the Paul Revere of the South, rode from Louisa County to Monticello to warn Thomas Jeffereson and other Virginia legislatures of incoming British troops. His ride was celebrated at Southern Revere Cellars on June 6 through an event hosted by VA250 and the Louisa County Historical Society. Jack Jouett Day Festival scheduled Saturday
Step back in time with the Jack Jouett Day Festival Saturday, June 8. This is a family-friendly event put on by Louisa County Parks, Rec & Tourism, the Louisa County Historical Society, & Southern Revere Vineyard & Farm to bring recognition to local Revolutionary folk hero John “Jack” Jouett and celebrate the rich history of Louisa County and the VA250th. Enjoy food, music, face painting, children’s activities and more. The event will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Southern Revere Cellars (1049 E Jack Jouett Road, Louisa).
