Gerald Frederick Daltan

The Honorable Gerald F. Daltan (Ret.), 82, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2026, in Austin, Texas. Judge Daltan, known to his friends as Gerry, served as a district court judge in the 15th Judicial Circuit of Virginia from 2005 until 2013. Prior to his service with the court, he was a private practice attorney with the law firm of Scott, Daltan and Van Lear, in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Gerry was born in Lynbrook, NY, on April 5, 1944, to Fred J. Daltan and Edna S. Daltan. At a young age, he moved with his family to Louisa County, Virginia, and graduated from Louisa County High School in 1962. There, he would meet, and later marry, his wife of 54 years, Martha Spicer Daltan.
Growing up, Gerry excelled in many sports, including football, baseball, basketball, tennis, and swimming. At age 14, he and his team broke a state record in the 200-meter Jr. Medley Relay. He was also an avid outdoorsman, joining his friends for hunting and fishing outings whenever he could.
After high school, Gerry attended the University of Richmond, graduating with a B.A. in Psychology in 1966. He went on to attend T.C. Williams School of Law, earning his Juris Doctorate in 1969, and was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Virginia and both the Eastern and Western District Courts of Virginia. Gerry and Martha moved from Richmond to Fredericksburg in 1970, where he began his law career.
In 1972, Gerry was elected Commonwealth’s Attorney for Spotsylvania County, where he served until 1975. Following this stint of public service, Gerry remained in private practice from 1975 until being appointed to the district court in 2005. In addition to his career, Gerry participated in many community service organizations, including the United Way. He is most remembered as one of the founding members of the Rappahannock Area YMCA. Aside from a demanding career and community engagement, Gerry got the most enjoyment out of his role as father and “Papa.” He loved attending and participating in a range of sports and activities for both his children and grandchildren.
Gerry was predeceased by his father, Fred J. Daltan; his mother, Edna S. Daltan; and his wife, Martha S. Daltan. He is survived by his sister, Deanne Daltan Pippin (Bill) of Louisa, VA, children, Ashley Daltan Vavasour (Dan) and Michael Townley Daltan (Mary Beth), and his three grandchildren, Cole Vavasour (24), Page Vavasour (22), and Bryce Daltan (23).
