William L. French

William L. French (CDR USN ,RET) passed away peacefully and joined his creator on Wednesday, 25 March 2026 at the age of 96. He was preceded in death by his parents, William L. and Audrey French; his first wife, Barbara H. French; his son, William L. French Jr.; and two granddaughters.

Upon graduating from Ohio State University, Bill was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy and became a Naval Aviator. During his 22 years of service, he proudly served his country in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

Following his retirement from the Navy, Bill continued his lifelong passion for aviation as a commercial flight instructor and airline pilot, attaining the rank of Captain. Later in life he enjoyed working in real estate, where he particularly valued meeting new people and learning about homes and communities.

Bill cherished the special time spent with his family, especially his children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren. He was an avid golfer with a true love for the game—if he wasn’t on the golf course, he could often be found in his basement working on his swing.

Bill loved to travel and often spent time in California and the Outer Banks, two places that held special meaning for him. Having lived a long, rich, and healthy life, he was deeply grateful for the many blessings that framed his life. Bill will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah French; his children, Col. Mark R. French, USA RET. (Sandi), Kristin L. Amos, Kimberly Conrad (Chris), and Stephen G. French (Lisa); 10 grandchildren; and 19 greatgrandchildren.

An end-of-life celebration is currently being planned.
