Protecting bird wildlife

The Belmont Club of Women held its monthly meeting on Wednesday, June 3, 2026. Our guest speaker Elizabeth Haynes gave a presentation entitled “Seven Simple Actions to Help Songbirds”. Her interest in song birds started in 2019 and their nature shop, Wildbirds Unlimited in Culpepper, opened in 2023.

We have lost 2.9 billion birds since 1970. She discussed many things we can do to prevent further loss of songbirds, what they eat and predators. Key take away points: make windows safe so they don’t fly into them, keep cats indoors, have native plants in gardens, avoid pesticides, and the dangers of plastic. The group had many questions about their bird feeders and bird houses and Elizabeth provided many helpful suggestions.

The Belmont Club of Women is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization open to members from Louisa, Spotsylvania and Orange Counties. Meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month, 10:00 am. at the Belmont Community Center, 7124 Belmont Road, Mineral, VA. Meetings consist of a speaker, social time for the group and the business meeting. Various fund-raising events held throughout the year support the club’s scholarship programs, donations to local non-profit organizations and other activities. New members are always welcome to attend. Come to a meeting as a guest to learn more about the organization.
