The Louisa County High School Envirothon Team earned first place at the regional (Area II) Envirothon competition held on April 23 in Madison County. Team members include Isaac Capozella, Sawyer Harris, Delilah Thomas, Diane Tornel, Lilith Zaleski, Colton Millway, and Kassie Polson. The team is coached by Kimberlee Jancaitis Martinak and Logan Horne.
With this victory, the team will advance to the state competition on May 17–18 at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
Envirothon is a hands-on natural resources competition for high school students that connects participants with natural resource professionals and deepens their understanding of key environmental topics, including soils, forestry, wildlife, and aquatics. At each level of competition- local, regional, state, and national- students complete field-based testing and deliver an oral presentation on a current environmental issue.
The competition is sponsored by Dominion Energy and the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts. The Louisa County team is also supported locally by the Thomas Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District.
Louisa County teams have a strong history of success, consistently earning top placements at regional, state, and national levels. Through programs like Envirothon, students from Louisa County and beyond develop the knowledge and skills needed to become future leaders in environmental stewardship and natural resource conservation.
