Virginia Master Naturalists

The Virginia Master Naturalists are again assisting the Virginia Department of Forestry (VDF) in its annual Acorn and Nut Collection project. The purpose of the project is to receive public donations of selected acorns and other tree nuts. The state’s Augusta Nursery grows these into seedlings which are sold to landowners (see www.buyVAtrees.com). In 2025, VDF received 13 tons of donated acorns, walnuts and chestnuts and produced 500,000 trees. James River Master Naturalist Chapter from Goochland, Louisa and Powhatan counties contributed 223 pounds of acorns and nuts from 13 separate species (types of trees).
