Filing deadline mid-June for council positions

Both the Town of Louisa and the Town of Mineral will have elections in November this year.
In the Town of Mineral, all six council seats, along with the mayor’s position, are up for election. According to Louisa County Registrar Cris Watkins, no candidates have filed for positions in the Town of Mineral as of May 22.
In the Town of Louisa, two council seats expire at the end of this year, one belonging to Vicky Harte and the other to John Jerl Purcel IV; in April, Purcell submitted his resignation. On May 19, the council appointed David Purcell (John’s uncle) to the seat.
In a letter submitted to Town Manager Stuart Turille, Purcell highlights having been a resident of the Town of Louisa for a majority of his life where he has raised his two children alongside his wife. From Nov. 1995 to January 2001, Purcell served as Controller and Vice President of J.S. Purcell Lumber Corporation before transitioning to its President, a position that he still holds today.
“Through operating J.S. Purcell Lumber Corporation for over 30 years, owning several rental properties in Town, and serving as an active member of the Louisa Volunteer Fire Department for many years, I have gained a great understanding of the needs and issues presenting to the town,” Purcell wrote. “If appointed to the Council, I look to offer a business approach background, as well as offer my financial experiences as a CPA for over 35 years.”
A special election will be held in November for recently appointed council member Graven Craig to fill the remainder of Daniel Crawford’s term since he vacated the seat in March. Crawford’s term runs through 2028.
In addition to the council seats, the mayoral seat for the Town of Louisa is also available. Since winning in a special election last November to fill the remainder of formermayor Garland Nuckol’s term, Ashley Michael has filed to run again. As of May 26, the only other candidate for Louisa Town Council is Brian Talbert according to Watkins.
The deadline to run for mayor or council for either town is June 16 at 7:00 p.m. The deadline for a two-year term on council in the special election is August 14 at 5:00 p.m. For interested candidates, Watkins said that two forms of general information are available at the General Registrar’s Office located at 103 McDonald Street.
