Blessed Assurance – Serenity

How would you define the word “serenity”? Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary defines it as “a state of utter calm and unruffled repose or quietude”. I’ve always had the ability to remain unruffled in many challenging situations. It was what gave me the ability to function in the ICU and Emergency Department environment without losing my cool or my mind. I’m not sure that I would have called myself serene when I was in the middle of the chaos and mayhem that often accompanied a shift in those environments, but I was able to block out the noise and emotion and find a way to focus on what needed to be done.

Edna Wingfield Duggins

Edna W. Duggins, born on February 13, 1928, passed away on September 9, 2026, at the age of 98. She was the daughter of Claude & Victoria Wingfield of Hanover County, Va. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Anna W. Beadles, her brothers Andrew, Francis, and Henry Wingfield, her son-in-law John Markey, and husband William Ray Duggins. Edna is survived by her daughters Victoria Lancaster (Kenneth), Claudia Markey, Virgilia Cutright (Jerry), and son James Duggins (Vickie), seven grandchildren Kristin Chapman, Sarah Blanchard, Justin Markey, Whitney Kirschbaum, Loren Kearney, Allison Coleman, and Daniel Cutright, and fourteen great grandchildren.

Heather Renee Schwartz

Heather Renee Schwartz, age 52, daughter of David and Alta Schwartz of Louisa, and sister to Julius Schwartz of Charlottesville, passed away on Sept 4, 2026, after 7 months of a very aggressive form of brain cancer, a glioblastoma. Heather had excellent care and was comfortable and at peace at passing. She was cared for by her daughter, Amalia Contreras, and husband Josue, at their home in Texas, and her son, Austin, of Spring Hill, Florida, with the caring assistance of hospice. According to her wishes, the body was cremated, and a small, private memorial service will be held later.

VDF annual acorn and nut collection project

The Virginia Master Naturalists are again assisting the Virginia Department of Forestry (VDF) in its annual Acorn and Nut Collection project. The purpose of the project is to receive public donations of selected acorns and other tree nuts. The state’s Augusta Nursery grows these into seedlings which are sold to landowners (see www.buyVAtrees.com). In 2025, VDF received 13 tons of donated acorns, walnuts and chestnuts and produced 500,000 trees. James River Master Naturalist Chapter from Goochland, Louisa and Powhatan counties contributed 223 pounds of acorns and nuts from 13 separate species (types of trees).

New location and Diaper Drive begin busy fall for FRC

The Family Matters Family ReSource Center (FRC) of Louisa has moved to a new location at 144 Resource Lane, Louisa, joining the Fluvanna/ Louisa Housing Foundation, Community Education Foundation, and Louisa Community Closet. The offices are adjacent to the Louisa County Resource Council, creating a resource-focused complex where local organizations can work together to support individuals and families in the community.
