VFW Post 8947 (201 Mineral Avenue, Mineral) will hold its annual Flag Retirement Ceremony at 11:00 a.m. Tattered and unserviceable American flags will be formally retired with due ceremony. People often have American flags that have been flown until they are tattered or have holes in the fabric, and they aren’t sure how to dispose of them respectfully. Rather than throw it out, the formal way to dispose of a U.S. flag that is no longer serviceable is to incinerate it, usually with a color guard, a bugler to play Taps and a formal ceremony. The Veterans of Foreign Wars and other civic groups have undertaken the responsibility to accept the worn out flags and provide this ceremony, so that even when a flag’s service life is at an end and it must be destroyed, it is done with dignity and respect. The public are encouraged to drop off any worn, unserviceableAmerican flags at the VFW Post in the days leading up to the ceremony (at the backdoor of the post, preferably wrapped in a bag or other plastic to avoid wetting or degrading the flags). Refreshments will be available at the event, proceeds to support VFW Post 8947 and VFW Post 8947 Auxiliary.
